First Sales of The Bones of Makaidos

The Bones of Makaidos is now out in some stores. This is a photo of me at the Salt Shaker bookstore in Enumclaw, Washington, with one of the first purchasers of the book. She created a costume to match the characters on the cover. Very cool!

The official release date is April 1. I'm not sure which stores will have the book that early, but it will help if you call your bookstore right away to make sure they have it on order.

Please report what the stores tell you, and also let me know when you get your own copy.

Father's Day Offer For Churches or Other Groups

If you are involved with a church or other group that would like to give a meaningful gift to its male members on Father's Day, consider this. I am offering to sell copies of The Image of a Father and Spit and Polish for Husbands at a big quantity discount.

Here is the breakdown:

1 to 9 copies - $5 each
10 to 99 copies - $3 each
100 or more copies - $2 each

This refers to total copies purchased, that is, 50 copies of one book and 50 of the other would be 100 copies and qualify for the $2 price.

I would also have to charge for shipping costs, which I would have to calculate based on the number of books requested.

If you or someone you know might be interested in this offer, please contact me by email at bryan (at) dragonsinourmidst (dot) com.

Christian Book Expo

I am at the Christian Book Expo in Dallas this weekend, and yesterday I had the opportunity to participate in a young authors panel with Bill Myers and Robert Elmer.

We had a lot of fun discussing writing and story planning along with the aspiring writers in the audience. Considering that the expo doesn't seem to be very well attended, I thought the number of people attending our panel was quite hight.

If you live in the Dallas area, I hope you can come out today. We will be doing the panel again at 2:00 pm. For more information about the expo, click here.

Books for Men - Part 1

Some blog readers might not know that, in addition to my three fantasy series, I also have two non-fiction books for men, The Image of a Father and Spit and Polish for Husbands. From time to time, I will post an excerpt from one of the books. With Fathers' Day approaching, you might think about getting a copy of one of these books, especially for a new dad or newlywed husband.

It's important, however, to be sensitive. Some men might not take it the right way. They might think you're sending a signal that they are not the husbands or fathers they ought to be. That's why I recommend these for newbies in the field of fathering and husbanding. They might know they need help.

Still, I'm sure anyone, man or woman, will enjoy these books, and they are very inexpensive, only five dollars plus shipping. Click here to order an autographed copy of The Image of a Father, or click here to order Spit and Polish for Husbands.

This excerpt is from the introduction to The Image of a Father.

With summer twilight casting a feather-soft glow on my daughter’s drooping eyes, I sing her toward dreamland, each word shushed in an envelope of whispers.

Oh Lord, you’re beautiful.
Your face is all I seek.
For when your eyes are on this child,
Your grace abounds to me. (Lyrics by Keith Green. © Birdwing Music/BMG Songs. All rights reserved. Used by permission.)

I kiss her forehead and watch her gentle smile fade. Tight wrinkles dig into her brow, signaling a question at the crossroads of her mind. “Daddy?” she asks, her eyes fluttering open. “What does God look like?”

What a question! How can I possibly answer it? A hundred duties await my attention. Every night brings a tug-of-war of fatherly responsibilities. On one side, bills and fix-it projects pull like gargantuan gods, busy work that must wait for every juvenile head to finally nestle in its pillow. On the other side, the peaceful solitude of gentle lullabies and butterfly kisses pull back, nightly reveries with my children that transcend time. Tonight my daughter wins the battle and I tuck her covers in at the sides as I try to think of an answer that will make sense to her world of concrete realities.

“Jesus told us that God is spirit,” I begin. “We can’t see our heavenly Father with our eyes, but we can sort of see Him by watching other people.”

“Like who?”

“Well, that’s an easy one. Remember what Jesus said? ‘He who has seen Me has seen the Father.’ Jesus is full of truth, mercy, and love. So is God the Father. If we watch Jesus, we’ll know what God the Father is like.”

“But Jesus isn’t here anymore. I can’t watch Him.”

I stroke her hair, aware of her lovely lack of abstract thought. She’s right. Jesus isn’t here anymore. Though I could explain the theological truth of “Christ in us,” the indwelling Holy Spirit who reveals the character of God to our hearts and minds, such a nebulous concept is surely out of her reach. There no longer walks a flesh and blood Savior who fills our eyes with the Father’s glory. At this moment I fully realize the gravity of my position in her sight, and its burden squeezes my chest. Dare I tell her my thoughts?

I take a deep breath and draw my hands back to my lap. “Then it’s up to me to show you what God looks like.”

She grins at me, her sleepiness chased away by playful thoughts. “Really? Did you go up to heaven and take a picture of Him or something?”

I poke her nose with my finger. “No, silly goose. It’s just that I’m your father, and it’s my job to show you what God is like. When God makes a father, He pours a bunch of His own qualities into him, the stuff that makes good fathers.”

“Like what?”

“Like protection, guidance, and—” I pause for effect and then tickle her ribs. “And anything that makes you smile.”

She giggles and pushes my arms away, and I gently take her hands into mine. When she settles down, she grins again and says, “I think I’d rather have a picture.”

I straighten my frame, my head held high, absurdly showing off my profile. “Well, then, think of me as your picture of God.” We both laugh, and I tuck her in tightly once more, whispering to settle her thoughts. “I can’t be everything God is, Sweetheart, but I can show you how He loves you like a father. I’m not a picture from a camera, but I am like an image of His fathering ways.” I caress her cheek with tender fingers and add, “Will that be enough?”

She smiles and her eyes begin drooping again, her voice stretching into a yawn. “That’ll be enough.”

I watch her eyelids close, and I sigh. Will I be able to fulfill my promise? Can I possibly bridge the gap between heaven and earth and reflect God’s perfect love in a way she can understand?
What does God look like, anyway? Do I know Him well enough myself? I pray that my feeble attempts will be empowered by God’s own desire to show His fathering character to my children.

With tears welling in my eyes, I finish my song, hoping my sweet girl will learn the everlasting song of God’s love, fusing her soul with God as she bears witness of His fathering heart in mine.

I want to take your word and shine it all around;
First, help me just to live it, Lord.
And when I’m doing well
Help me to never seek a crown;
For my reward is giving glory to you.

Final Reviews Before "Bones" Release

I have three more reviews from pre-publications readers of The Bones of Makaidos. Now we wait for April 1. Only a week and a month until the book is released. I hope readers are as excited as I am.

The Bones of Makaidos is brilliant! It's amazing to see how God worked through each of the characters and how they have grown in faith, courage, and love throughout their adventures. If you don't think the Oracles of Fire series can get any better then think again, this book outdoes the rest! Prophesies are fulfilled and any questions from the last seven books are answered. The Bones of Makaidos is my favorite of Mr. Davis' books and I know it will be yours too.
—Taylor Ward (Age 15)

The Bones of Makaidos is a fitting end to the best series of books I have ever read! If you have read any of the books in the Dragons in our Midst or Oracles of Fire series this one is a MUST read. While I read I felt like I was in the story itself, crying with them, laughing with them, fighting with them. In the ultimate battle of good versus evil I felt joy at surprise reunions and sadness over the loss of loved ones. In the end I was left with a happiness that can only come from experiencing God at work in this world of ours. The Bones of Makaidos provides a Happily-Ever-After ending that is like no other and will leave you as the reader longing for an adventure like this.
—Rachel Tettleton (Age 16)

"I want you to win my heart. I want you to fight for me, sweat for me, bleed for me. I want you to know that you had to pay a valuable price for me, and that I am a treasure in your mind . . ." The Bones of Makaidos captures the hearts of readers, brings them into the lives of all the characters, and shows that God is always there and if you have faith he will reward you. I would recommend this book to everyone I know and think that every one would come out with a new light shinning in their eyes.

Three More "Bones" Reviews

The Bones of Makaidos is coming on April 1. Here are three more reviews from pre-publication readers.

With exciting twists, heartfelt experiences, and golden principles full of faith and truth, Mr. Davis brings his magnificent saga to a close. The Bones of Makaidos is full of memories from the previous books, but it’s also an amazing adventure in its own right. Dangerous, world changing, endeavors have captivated the lives of Billy, Bonnie, Walter, Ashley, Sapphira, and Elam. They have grown closer to each other, and stronger in their faith in Elohim. Now, together with the rest of the Oracles of Fire, they face their final battle, the fiercest challenge, preceding the ultimate reward. It was with excitement, yet a sort of trepidation, that I read this final installment. Somehow, I feel connected to these fictional heroes. So, it was with great sorrow I said my final goodbyes, and turned the last page as this inspiring story came to a satisfying conclusion, dissolving in a flame of glory.
—Bryce McLemore (Age 15)

After reading the Dragons in Our Midst series, and now the astonishing conclusion of the Oracles of Fire series, I know God has worked through Mr. Davis to deliver this beautifully heartfelt story of hope, faith, spiritual strength, and undying love.

In The Bones of Makaidos, action will spike your adrenaline, suspense will urge you to read on, sacrifice and salvation will bring you to tears, and the characters will encourage you to trust in God more than ever before. This finale will inspire you to become an Oracle of Fire.
—Regan Hickman (Age 15)

I laughed, I cried, I shared with each character's joy and suffering. I could not put this book down, even to go to bed. The Bones of Makaidos pulled me in from cover to cover. Bryan Davis has saved the best for last! This book is definitely one you don't want to miss.
—Sarah Pratt (Age 15)

More Reviews for The Bones of Makaidos

Bryan Davis has revealed through Dragons In Our Midst and Oracles Of Fire an adventure set apart, and this final book is no exception. In this final volume, everything falls into place beautifully, and its message of faith and bravery is one to treasure. Like all of his books, it carries profound real-world messages of faith and truth. The Bones Of Makaidos is a tale of love, courage, sacrifice, and redemption; a wonderful end to an awesome series. Both Mr. Davis books and his personal example have inspired me in my faith. Having been drawn into the adventures of Billy, Bonnie, and the others since Chapter 1 of Raising Dragons, all I can say is: What a ride!

-T. McCarville (Age 18)

The Bones of Makaidos is, in my opinion, the best book that Mr. Davis has written yet! The events in this book left me bewildered, and they completely change your outlook on this entire series. A lot changes, but that makes it even better. It's a work of art!

-Anna Bjella (Age 13)

Bryan Davis has done it again! I knew Mr. Davis was an excellent author, but I was amazed to find myself double taking and rereading pages as my jaw dropped. You will be up late into the night reading The Bones of Makaidos telling yourself, “just one more chapter” over and over again. Possibly Mr. Davis’ best yet!

~ Jacob Eggert (13 years old)

This book is absolutely amazing. It's thrilling to join in with all of these character's adventures, once again! I can't keep my hands away from the book. The Dragons In Our Midst/Oracles of Fire series always gets better and better each book. It's sad to know that this will be the last one, but it's great anyway! A must-read for sure!
~Danielle

After reading the rest of the Oracles of Fire and Dragons in our Midst books, I find The Bones of Makaidos to be a smashing ending. It's so nice to find not one, but two book series that are so enthralling, adventure-packed, inspiring, and God honoring."

Rebecca Vath - Age 16

The Bones of Makaidos Reviews

Reviews of The Bones of Makaidos are starting to trickle in from pre-publication readers. I'll post them here as they come in.

It is fitting for the last book in the Oracles of Fire to be the best. The Bones of Makaidos captured me from the very beginning. Bryan Davis's ability to vividly depict scenes is at it's best in the final installment of his best selling fantasy series. You will not be able to put the book down!

Grant Miller- age 15

This book is amazing. Words can't describe. I've cried more in this book than the other 7 put together - some were tears of sadness, but most have been tears of joy. Each time you read it it'll be just as powerful as the first time, if not more. It was really cool discovering what an oracle of fire really is, and why Bonnie's last name is Silver. All loose ends will be tied, and when you read the last page, you'll be left with a sense of satisfaction, a sense of peace that's hard to describe.

Connie Wolters - age 27

Beloved characters, both new and old, grace the pages of this tale and beckon you to enter their world one last time as they fight against the growing darkness around them. With hopelessness knocking at the doors of their hearts, the characters must trust in God to see them through and must learn that love never fails. The tapestry masterfully woven is finally complete and when you finish the last page, you will rejoice at seeing the characters you have known, perhaps for years, find their rest at the end of their long journey. But is it really the end?

Anne K. Riley - age: 19

The Bones of Makaidos Release

AMG Publishers told me yesterday that April 1 will be the official release date for The Bones of Makaidos. I received the typeset version of the manuscript, which will the published version. It is 676 pages long, so it's ten percent bigger than Eye of the Oracle. I like the logo they chose to put on each page, but I'm not telling what it is. :-)

If you pre-ordered the book from me, I will send out your copy as soon as I get my supply, which will probably be a few days before April 1.

I hope you're looking forward to the release as much as I am.

Three Books in 2009

The new year is well underway. In 2009 I will have three new books hitting the shelves. As the day for each release draws close, I will give much more information about each book.

April - The Bones of Makaidos, the fourth and final book in the Oracles of Fire series

May - Nightmare's Edge, the third in the Echoes from the Edge trilogy

September - I Know Why the Angels Dance, a standalone novel for adults

All three books are complete and finished with the editing process, so I'm excited about seeing them come out.

I am now working on a new series for young adults. When I come up with a title and get well into the story, I'll tell everyone much more about it.
