Black Friday?

I'm up early on this Friday after Thanksgiving. Why? Because my wife and seventeen-year-old daughter got up at four a.m. to go to Wal-mart for a big sale. They said something about jeans for eight dollars and took off into the darkness.

Okay, when you have seven children, it's important to take advantage of great bargains. I get that. But I wonder why stores can't offer these sales in the daytime when normal people are functioning at normal capacity and able to make normal buying decisions.

Hmmm. I think I just answered my own question.

Anyway, since I couldn't go back to sleep, I've been researching this Black Friday phenomenon. It seems that the label started because of traffic jams in Philadelphia, and it became more popular when some economists came up with the idea that this is when retailers begin to show a profit (in the black instead of in the red). I'm not sure if these reasons are true or not, but they make some sense.

From my position, I think the name comes from what it looks like outside at this time in the morning. I can't see a thing. But I guess the label isn't important. At least it has me up early and using this blog post to get my brain in gear.

So, in celebration of Black Friday, I'll have a sale! From now until the end of the year, I am putting the first book in each series (Raising Dragons, Eye of the Oracle, and Beyond the Reflection's Edge) on sale for $7.50 plus shipping. Now you can introduce my series to friends and relatives on your gift list for a great price.

If you want to take advantage of these offers, go to my shopping page at http://www.daviscrossing.com/shopping.htm or Click Here.

I am also now taking pre-orders for The Bones of Makaidos, scheduled to come out in April of 2009. You can see how to order that book on the shopping page.

Just for fun, feel free to share your Black Friday experiences.

Happy Black Friday! (Now that I've finished this post, I think I can go back to sleep.)

I got up at 5:45 to go to Wal-mart to shop with my mom. We went for the $2, $6 and $9 movies. We ended up with movies p.j. and the $8 jeans.

Eye of the Oracle for $7.50??!!

I MUST take serious consideration of this offer!!!

Canada doesn't really have a Black Friday, so I can't really talk about any experiences...I didn't even know what Black Friday was until a few days ago! :D

I didn't think Wal Mart made Mom's size. :)

I was up at 4 a.m. but I'm up at that time every morning with Gabey-baby. I certainly did not go shopping. I feel blessed just to have enough energy to make it through the day. :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

DragonRider,
My wife returned pretty quickly. She said Wal-mart was so crowded they could barely move. She couldn't get the jeans because the crowd was ten lines of people deep trying to look through the selection. Fortunately, everyone was very friendly, which we have come to expect in rural Tennessee. She got a couple of things she was looking for, so it was probably worth the trip.

Ian, the $7.50 doesn't include shipping. Unfortunately, shipping to Canada is pretty expensive.

Arianna, I'm not sure what size they carry, but she didn't get any. It was just too crowded.

I don't really have any *Black Friday* experiences to speak of, since I live in Canada, too.

Boxing Day is pretty scary here though. I was at a Futureshop on Boxing Day, just stopping to pick up a game I wanted. I walked into the store, and couldn't walk any further. I was surprized, because it wasn't that early in the day (I think it was in the afternoon, actually), and the town I live in and where the store was, isn't that big.

I like shopping on the day after boxing day. I bought a pair of jeans for $20 (Canadian), and they have lasted me a good 2 years (no holes, or fading from what I can see).

Yeah, like I said, no Black Friday experience to speak of, but a few stories of Boxing Day (which is similar in some respects).

Thanks for story/history

My Black Friday find:

Got myself a copy of Microsoft Office at $129. Goes to $250 tomorrow and $499 the beginning of next year.

Needed it and I've never seen the full suite at that price. It'll be nice to have the office program that the rest of the world uses.

(The Mac version is on sale at Amazon.com for 74% off. The Windows version isn't.)

Cheap Microsoft? Nah...can't be... =)

*nods* I understand that it doesn't include shipping costs.

Just so I know (as I am not knowledgable in these areas :)), about how much would the shipping cost?

Ian, I don't know what it would be. The Paypal shopping cart calculates it. You could start the order and see what it charges, and then cancel the order if you don't want to complete it.

That's a great deal!

I don't like Black Friday. I went one year to our Wal-Mart and it was so crowded. People were so so rude. They pushed past and had no consideration for us. I live in a town of only 4,000 people, so I don't even want to think how it is in bigger cities. That was the last year I went. It's just not worth it.
