Florida Christian Writers' Conference: Teens & Scholarships

It's not too early to plan for the 2008 Florida Christian Writers' Conference. I will be teaching the Teen Track, so I hope many of my readers who also enjoy writing will want to come to the conference.

Here is the website: Click Here

There are scholarships available for teenagers. Please see this link for more information.

We are not setting a specific due date for applications but will begin awarding scholarships immediately based on application essays and need. Once the scholarships are awarded, we will stop accepting applications. Please send application essays and contact information to me at flwriters@dragonsinourmidst.com

Oh, I'd like to come so bad as I only live a few hours away in North Carolina. It looks pretty expensive though and I don't know if my parents will pay that much. I'll have to see if there is some way I can chip in to make them let me come.

You could apply for a scholarship.

I just saw that. 2 questions. If I submit an essay, do I have to be on the point of if I don't get one I pay part? Whether I get a scholarship or not could be a big deciding factor for my parents. Are there any courses you can take as a teaneager besides the ones you teach? On the schedule I saw many periods of the day that you didn't have the Tean Track going for. I really hope I can come though. It would be cool first of all to be taught by one of my favorite authors. I still need a lot of help and advice on my writing technique.

I don't fully understand your first question, but I will try to clarify how the scholarships work.

If you submit an essay you are under no obligation to come to the conference. There are two possible scholarship awards, a full, Cec Murphey scholarship, and a partial scholarship awarded by the conference itself. If you submit your application, a decision will be made pretty quickly, and you will hear a "yes" or "no" soon. Then, you get to decide if you will accept the scholarship and come to the conference. I hope that answers your question.

Regarding your second question, in addition to the Teen Track, there are a number of workshops taught by others you can attend. Those take place in the periods you noted.

I am thankful that I am one of your favorite authors. I hope to see you there.

You answered my questions. I'll probably be starting on that essay soon. (:

I am a little confused on the manuscript submission thing. Is it required that we bring whatever we are working on or is that optional and you can just get extra help with our story? Clarification would be most helpful.

Bryan Davis said...

You are not required to submit a manuscript or bring any of your work in progress. It's completely up to you. If you do bring your work, we'll try to help you with it.

What about scholarships for young adults. I don't qualify as a teen anymore. LOL.

The scholarship program has partial scholarships available for everyone who wants to participate in the Teen Track, even if you have passed the teen years.

phew, I'm just hitting the upper age mark on this one...
wow... scary thought...

but I'm going to start my essay tomorrow on the long bus ride to Philly, since we're going to see Amaddeus...

christian_fantasy_adict, no, it isn't required that you submit what you're working on, but I do recommend it. Mr. Davis, as well as other freelance authors, editors, etc... can be a humoungous help. I submitted a couple of my stories just for help when I was there last year, and it's helped me a lot not only with the stories I've submitted, but the advice they gave for those stories, I know I can use in the future when I write new ones.

Mr. Davis, This has nothing to do with the post, but I did have a question. I posted a poem from one of your books on my blog, in fact you commented on it. I was just thinking about it the other day, was that legal? If not I will delete it. Thanks.

JesusFreak,

Since you gave me credit for it, I am very pleased that you posted my poem. It is very common for people to use excerpts from a book when reviewing it. It's perfectly legal as long as you cite the source and don't try to claim it as your own.

It's called "Fair Use." Check it out at this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use

Thanks for the advice Pais Charos. Do I bring that stuff with me or do I submit it before I go? And I'm writing a trilogy so when it says write a summary of your book would I do it for the whole series or just that book?

Unknown said...

You can mail it in before, or bring it in with you and submit it when you register.

As for whether your summary should be about the trilogy or the first book...I don't know. Mr. Davis?

Bryan Davis said...

It's usually best to write a summary for a first book and mention that it is part of a series.

One hundred percent hypothetically, if I were to go, would I HAVE to be accompanied by an adult? Or would another teen friend suffice? I s'pose it would be highly difficult to navigate oneself without an adult though . . .

Bryan Davis said...

There is no requirement that I know of to have an adult accompany you.

Ooh, I know this is kind of late...But I'm going to start writing my essay as soon as I can. I really want to go to the conference, but when my mom found out the price, she knew it was impossible. Do you know if they are still accepting them? And if they'll still be excepting them in December?

Bryan Davis said...

Shadow,

Applications and essays are still being accepted. Try to get yours in as soon as you can.
