Countdown to Beyond the Reflection's Edge Day 27

Only 1 day until Beyond the Reflection's Edge is released. Tomorrow!!!

Trivia:
On this final day of the countdown, I would like to thank my editors at Zondervan for helping me make this book what it is today. I met Andy Meisenheimer (See photo) at the ACFW conference in Dallas in 2006. I told him about this story, he got excited about it, and just a few weeks later, I signed a contract.

I would also like to thank Barbara Scott, the official acquisitions editor for the project (Sorry, Barbara. I couldn't find a photo of you). Although Andy did the initial macro edit of the story, Barbara was involved all along. Without these two in my corner, the story wouldn't have been as good as it is today.

News: Today I am starting my book tour to promote this series. I have 31 events in the next month, so if you remember to pray for me, I would appreciate it.

Reviews:

This book has everything a reader likes. Action, thought, thrill, and of course, a great plot! This is top five must read book on my list. Enjoy! ~ Hannah Webb, Age 13

Countdown to Beyond the Reflection's Edge Day 26

Only 2 days until Beyond the Reflection's Edge is released.

Trivia:
Details. They make a story feel real. When an author includes tidbits of detail in the action, just the right amount so that it doesn't interfere or slow the story, he enhances the reality of the setting.

For example, notice the hatch on the right-hand wall. This is where my hero emerges from a maintenance area I posted earlier. He can't just walk out; he has to jump, so including a jump was essential. And, since he's escaping, what's the first thing he notices? The fire escape sign.

When I'm reading, I like to see details sprinkled throughout, but not paragraph after paragraph and page after page, as I have seen in many fantasy novels. I believe details need to be salted, not dumped, just enough to enhance the flavor. Otherwise, readers scan through the boring details, looking for where the action picks up again.

News: I have decided on a prize for the contest I will be running next month. I got this idea from Wayne Thomas Batson, author of The Door Within series and Isle of Swords. I will give away books for life, that is, the winner will receive a copy of each new book I publish for the rest of my career. Since the contest will have a points system, I will give smaller prizes to the rest of the top ten finishers. Look for details in the next couple of weeks.

Reviews:

Countdown to Beyond the Reflection's Edge Day 25

Only 3 days until Beyond the Reflection's Edge is released.

Trivia:
Sometimes research involves more than simply looking at something as it exists today. For this story I often had to find out how things were thirty years ago. In the photo, you'll see a barrier wall between a railroad track and a neighborhood. The wall looked fairly new, so I thought maybe it hadn't been there more than ten years or so. That detail was important for my story.

News: After only a couple of days, there are already 13 reviews of Beyond the Reflection's Edge on Amazon.com. Twelve reviews gave it five stars. The single four-star review had very positive comments, so I'm excited about the response so far. And it's still a few days before the book's official release date.

Reviews:

Beyond the Reflection's Edge is a non-stop page-turner that forces the reader to stay completely engaged start to finish. Lovely story and characters. I love how Bryan mixes the beauty of the arts, particularly music, with the mysteries of science. Well-paced, not a scene lost, and definitely leaving everyone begging for the sequel. I'm very much looking forward to more of this one. ~ Kaci Hill, age 24

Beyond the Reflection's Edge is an intriguing work of art, filled with fast paced action that'll keep you guessing and entertained. The characters are charming, and the setting out-of-this world! A novel I would recommend to Fantasy fans, as well as some Mystery and Sci-fi readers. ~ Nicole Maroon, Age 16

Countdown to Beyond the Reflection's Edge Day 24

Only 4 days until Beyond the Reflection's Edge is released.

Trivia:
As I wrote yesterday, sometimes research targets don't quite work out. I found this Mississippi River bridge in Davenport, Iowa, that would have been great for the story. It had one feature that made it impossible to use. Those who have already read the story can probably figure it out.

News: I have heard from two people who found Beyond the Reflection's Edge in stores, so that means the book has already been released, making my countdown somewhat anticlimactic. But I'll press on with it, because the book probably hasn't reached all the stores around the country.

Reviews:

Mr. Davis has really done it this time. He has weaved a tale full of action, adventure, grief, and true friendship, maybe even surpassing Dragons in our Midst. This is one book you won’t want to put down. ~ Sam Plowman, Age 15

The wonderful world of Fantasy and Christian fiction has once again been combined into another adventurous story written by Bryan Davis. Trivia:
Sometimes it's just as interesting to comment on research that I didn't use in the books. This is the Chicago Theatre. I went inside and looked at the auditorium, a gorgeous facility--towering ceilings, ornate carvings, and a massive seating area. It would have made a great setting for the book, but the staff wouldn't let me tour the backstage area, so I had to go elsewhere.

Countdown to Beyond the Reflection's Edge Day 22

Only 6 days until Beyond the Reflection's Edge is released.

Trivia:
Maybe the most fun part of going on research journeys is the opportunity to meet fans of my books. I met these readers at an Italian restaurant in Chicago, and we had a great time talking about their love of reading and writing. We also discussed the Beyond the Reflection's Edge story, so they heard some tidbits about it long before it was published.

News: I am working on a contest for all Beyond the Reflection's Edge readers. If you can think of a good prize that would attract participants, please post a comment to let me know.

Reviews:

Rarely does one happen upon such a wonderful book. No! Not the type that you feel you physically still see all but words and pages. But the type of book which transports you to another world. Everything about the book kept me awake through the late hours, as I cried, laughed, and smiled; reading one of the deepest books I have read in recent memory. This is the prop room beneath the Ganz performance hall in Chicago. As you can see, it's quite a mess, but it houses a very interesting collection of oddities for theatrical performances.

In my story, Nathan makes a gruesome discovery in this room that changes his life forever.

News: Today is my wife's birthday. If you know her, feel free to contact her with birthday wishes.

Reviews:

Three different earths, three different dimensions, each spiraling out of control as the weave that holds the dimensions begins to crumble. With Beyond the Reflection’s Edge, Bryan Davis has penned a tale that readers of his previous works couldn’t have anticipated. Starting out fast, the book never slows down until the last turn of the page. A worthy read for all lovers of science fiction and contemporary fantasy. ~ Holli Herdeg, Age 15

This was a superb Christian book that kept me interested from page one. It is thoughtful, yet filled with action. Its plot is fast moving, but powerful. Heroes who are strong and brave, yet believable in every way. A Christian view that is refreshing and real. Trivia:
This is a photo of the bridge crossing the Mississippi River on Interstate 80 between Iowa and Illinois. At one point in the story, a very dangerous traffic mishap occurs at this location. News: I added a school in the Dallas area to my schedule, Life School in Red Oak, May 12.

Reviews:

This was quite an adventure that Nathan and Kelly and others had! High speed car chases, motorcycle chases, dimensional shifting, leaping from one building to another! Bryan Davis has a wonderful storyline involving relationships, morality questions, trust, and doubt. The book moves along quickly and you wonder where the time has gone. Trivia:
A bunch of rags? No, they're curtains I found backstage at the performance hall at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. While researching for the book, saw these curtains, and it gave me an idea for the story. It's a good thing for my hero and heroine that they also found these curtains, or it would have been ... ahem ... curtains for them. (Cue the groans)

News: Yesterday I gave away several copies of Beyond the Reflection's Edge to college musicians. They had just finished playing Beethoven's Fifth Symphony with the Memphis University orchestra (a great performance) and joined me to celebrate my birthday. Since the book has music as a strong theme and plot device, I hope musicians will embrace the book and tell other musicians about it.

Reviews:

Harmonizing perils, the gift of true love, and even the sorrows of death takes true literary ingenuity, so I'm not surprised in the least that all of these can be found in Mr. Davis' newest work. I fell in love with all of the vivid characters and was captured by the realistic events that made my emotions rise alongside theirs, as though I was traveling with them beyond the reflection's edge. ~ Tori Sharp, Age 13

After finishing and reflecting on Beyond the Reflection's Edge, I find that there is much more to the book than an engaging fantasy/mystery story. Bryan Davis has caused me to think about my own relationship with the Creator. As someone whose hobby is writing, many statements in this book have reminded me Who I am really writing for. And for all the Kellys out there who are searching for the truth, and for the Nathans facing tumultuous times, I recommend this book wholeheartedly. ~ Luke Gledhill, Age 20

In this nonstop drama that kept me guessing from beginning to end, Bryan Davis has created a fascinating study, in edge-of-the-chair mystery form, of the working of the free will as lives play out in parallel dimensions. This book took me on a gripping adventure in which true-to-life characters use music and mirrors to find places of refuge and escape as well as places to lurk. This is an exciting and enjoyable tale in which we get to see the Master Composer's handiwork being performed in people's lives. I've enjoyed Mr. Davis' other series, and this new one may very well be the best one yet. ~ Peter Blaskiewicz, Community College Teacher

Only 22 days until Beyond the Reflection's Edge is released.

Trivia:
In the story there were a couple of scenes in Chicago in which the hero and heroine had to escape using a fire escape that had a swinging ladder for the lowest set of stairs. Here is a photo of what a typical Chicago fire escape looks like, including the ladder in the folded up position.

News: I am working on writing book #3 in this series. If you will pray for me I would appreciate it.

Reviews:

Music, mirrors, mysteries, and multiple dimensions. How do they fit together? Read Beyond the Reflection’s Edge and you'll find out! This is a marvelous puzzle of a story, a tale of families and friends bound by love and faith in the midst of scientific discoveries that could change creation for the better...or the worse. A great read for teens and young adults. ~ Jason Waguespack, The World of Rigel Chase: Legend of the Shaper

Objects in mirror may be closer than they appear. Beyond the Reflection’s Edge is one part creepy, two parts cool! Cleverly combining cutting edge technology, creative thinking, and classical music, Bryan Davis weaves together a wonderfully suspenseful plot with humorously memorable characters in a truly scientific fiction. Also, because Beyond the Reflection’s Edge pays homage to so many classics, the reader will find it comfortably accessible, whether they are fans of Dorothy (Wizard of Oz), Marty (Back to the Future), or Neo (The Matrix). As the story races along and the suspense crescendos, this engaging novel gets harder and harder to put down … even as the lights dim. One thing is for sure. I will never look at a fun house of mirrors quite the same way again. It’s the mirrors! ~ Chip Conrad, Age 39

Countdown to Beyond the Reflection's Edge Day 5

Only 23 days until Beyond the Reflection's Edge is released.

Trivia:
There is a car-chase scene in the book where my main character comes upon a drawbridge and is trapped. Here is a photo of the drawbridge in Chicago. I just happened to be there when the span opened, so I took as many pictures as I could. It helped me write the scene in a realistic way ... well, as realistic as the fantasy elements in the story would allow.

News: Our current release schedule will bring the second book in the series, Eternity's Edge, to stores in October of this year.

Reviews:

Beyond the Reflection’s Edge is an amazing story of fantasy, adventure, and an unparalleled exploration that will keep you turning pages until you're done. You won't be able to wait for the next one. Seriously. Brain aneurysm type problem here. ~ Casey Rochester, Age 16

I loved how Beyond the Reflection's Edge pushed me not to be satisfied with appearances, but to search for truth. It's so beautifully complex in that each page brings light to a new facet of the plot. Several times I read until late at night because I couldn't stand to leave Nathan and Kelly hanging! ~ Anna Mottaz, Age 15

Countdown to Beyond the Reflection's Edge Day 4

Only 24 days until Beyond the Reflection's Edge is released.

Trivia:
There is a scene in the book that take place at a performance hall in Chicago. My friend and I checked out several possible places in downtown Chicago until we settled on Ganz Hall. Every door, every hall, every staircase, and even the fire escape you will read about in the book, I looked at and photographed.

This is a photo of the stage at Ganz Hall.

News: The name of the third book in the series will be Edge of Chaos.

Reviews:

The first chapter of Beyond the Reflection’s Edge contained more emotion and action then some books ever reach. From there, the story builds in depth to an extraordinary conclusion. Nathan, Kelly, Clara and Francesca, like the much-loved characters of Davis' prior books, are realistic and touching portrayals of faith in action. I can't wait for the next installment. ~ Julie Dick, Age 15

Bryan Davis' Beyond the Reflection's Edge is his best work yet. He is able to once again touch the hearts of readers and illustrate the virtues of love, trust, sacrifice, and the power of music. Filled with unforgettable characters, intense action, and heart-wrenching moments, this book is a must-read for teens and adults alike. If you picked this book up just out of curiosity, you can't put it back on the shelf! ~ Thomas Bowers, Age 15

Countdown to Beyond the Reflection's Edge Day 3

Only 25 days until Beyond the Reflection's Edge is released.

Trivia:
There is a scene in the book that take place at O'Hare airport in Chicago. A friend of mine and I went there and mapped out where the characters went. It was important for me to see the layout, the roads, and the surrounding neighborhoods. I wanted to get everything right.

News: I am planning a couple of book tour events in Chicago, probably May 23 and 24. It should be fun to promote in the city where some of the action takes place.

Reviews:

Such a beautiful, captivating story of genuine love, blended with plenty of action, adventure and suspense. Completely heartwarming, yet a riveting mystery. Beyond the Reflection’s Edge definitely keeps you on your toes! An awesome book! An absolute must read! ~ Melissa Puckett, Age 22

Beyond the Reflection's Edge is a literary roller coaster that never slowed down. I loved every minute of it. I don't think I will be able to find a book of this caliber anywhere else among the genre. Bryan Davis did a masterful job and I will be eagerly awaiting the sequel. ~ Kyle Wolter, Age 14
